MMT UMN Wins Three Silver Medals at the International Business Sustainability Event

Three teams of MMT students successfully won silver medals in an international competition (Doc. UMN)

TANGERANG – Three teams from the Master of Technology Management Study Program (MMT) UMN won silver medals in the International Sustainability Invention, Innovation, and Design Showcase 2022 (ISIIDS 2022) competition for the University category.

ISIIDS 2022 is an international competition organized by the Faculty of Management and Business UiTM Malaysia on 22 March 2022. Themed “Pathways to Sustainability Innovation,” this competition was attended by various people from professionals to academics from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

“We are also proud because we can be part of the success of our current students,” Prio Utomo, the Head of the UMN MMT Study Program, said.

The realization of sustainable business (sustainability) is a separate contribution to saving the earth from destruction. On the other hand, the contestants have to dig deep into their brains to create creative, innovative, and sustainable business ideas.

Prio said MMT UMN had equipped its students to answer this challenge, especially through the use of technology. He said it was essential to create awareness that the purpose of creating a business is not just to make a profit.

“There is an awareness that the purpose of building a business is not only for profit and to benefit people, but also the environment for business sustainability for our children and grandchildren,” Prio said.

This was also acknowledged by one of the MMT UMN 2021 students who won at the ISIIDS 2022 event. Janalia Kurniati Sjarif shared that the learning materials at MMT UMN had facilitated herself and her team to create sustainable business ideas. They are provided with various guidance starting from Business Model, Strategy and Innovation; Value Creation & Innovation Management; Technology Industry & Competitive Analysis.

“We learned about business model concepts, sustainability, scientific methods, creating value, innovation, and others that allowed us to come up with this idea,” Janalia explained.

Janalia collaborated with her colleagues from MMT UMN 2021, namely Devi Irnaldi, Ronald William Marbun, Mohammad Rinaldi, and Muhammad Ghiffari Lukmanul Alif Pohan. They brought the theme “Combining Sustainability and Budget-Friendly: A New Business Model in Eyewear World.” This business idea utilizes waste from eyeglass frames.

“Even though the eyeglass frames seem small, they are a waste that affects the environment if you just throw them away especially if there’s a plentiful amount of them. Adding to the thought that there are different kinds of materials in one eyeglass frame. To recycle those materials must be carefully separated, and it’s not easy,” Janila explained.

Then, there were also other teams from MMT UMN 2021 who won silver medals in this competition. They are Yunanto Herlaksono, Chrysan Kirana, Yasinta Nikita Titisari, Veninchia Gardenia, and Ridhony Hutasoit. This team brought the theme, ​​“GREENOLOGY – Green Technology Platform (Application and Website) as Contribution to Circular Economy in Indonesia.”

“This business idea is a platform-based app and web to recycle Used Cooking Oil (UCO) and Plastic Waste (PET) by picking up trash from the community to be sent to recycling companies,” Chrysan explained.
