Earning 2 Billion from the Ministry of Education and Culture, UMN’s Management Study Program Starts The Independent Entrepreneur Project

TANGERANG – The Management Study Program team at Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) has won a grant of 2 billion Rupiah for the implementation of the Ministry of Research and Technology’s Independent Entrepreneur (Wirausaha Merdeka/WMK) program. On Friday, September 1, 2023, the official start of this UMN Program on “Creating Digitalization of Entrepreneurial Innovation through Action Based Entrepreneurial Education Approach for Sustainable Economic Development” was attended by the Deputy for Youth Development of the Ministry of Youth & Sports.

Wirausaha Merdeka (WMK) is part of the Independent Campus (Kampus Merdeka) program of the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek), which provides opportunities for students to learn and develop themselves into future entrepreneurs, through activities outside the lecture class. 

In his speech, Prof. Dr. H. M Asrorun NI’AM, S.Ag, M.A, Deputy for Youth Development of the Ministry of Youth & Sports, emphasized that entrepreneurship is the first and most strategic door in accelerating our independence as a nation. 

“Through this WMK project, we can accelerate the growth of entrepreneurship towards 100 years of Advanced Indonesia in 2024, which is supported by the number of entrepreneurs whose ratio meets the prerequisites for Advanced Indonesia, which is a minimum of 4%, which currently touches 3.44%,” Asroran said. 

In his speech, Dr. Ninok Leksono, M.A., the Rector of UMN, argued that MSMEs are entrepreneurs who can be the main pillar of the country’s economy, but small businesses are often still conventional. 

“UMN, through SkyStar Ventures, is given knowledge and techniques for business development, especially because UMN is an ICT-based university, which will emphasize how ICT can beautify the design, facilitate production, and accelerate the delivery of each business,” Ninok said.

The experience of the WMK program in UMN with Skystar Ventures can be brought back to the universities of the participants from various regions in Indonesia as a form of contribution to Indonesia’s diversity, adding “color” to every association and business collaboration carried out.

In the process, five categories of provisions for student business types and MSME fields will be explored by participants, namely:

1. Food and Beverage
2. Fashion
3. Creative Industry (agency, photography)
4. Craft Products (knitting shoes, accessories, etc.)
5. Technology and Digital (e-commerce, website, application, and artificial intelligence)

Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN), in the second volume of the WMK program in 2023 for the first time, succeeded in becoming a WMK Implementing University from 34 selected universities. The Chief Executive of UMN’s WMK 2023 Program, Dr. Hendy Tannady, representing the committee, hopes that next year UMN can be trusted again as the MBKM WMK implementing college representing LLDIKTI region 3.

“The implementation of WMK UMN 2023 consists of three phases: pre-immersion, immersion and post-immersion. In the pre-immersion stage, participants will learn a hybrid in UMN, immersion participants will learn to run a business in SMEs, and in the post-immersion stage, participants work in teams to complete reports and prototypes,” Hendy said.  

Timothy Dustin, Chair of the UMN Management Student Association (HIMMA) Gen. XIII conveyed the role of HIMMA in WMK UMN 2023, namely in the front-line process of the continuity of hybrid lectures, which was carried out for four weeks before the program kick-off, to welcoming guests and implementing the kick-off event (1/9/2023). In the future, there will be three hybrid lectures and one workshop for participants that will be held and involve HIMMA UMN in the process.

“Hopefully, from here, the WMK UMN 2023 participants can develop their knowledge of entrepreneurship and use it in their own business so that their business can grow even more and provide examples or illustrations to their younger siblings,” said Dustin when asked about the expectations of the program implementation. 

The purpose of the WMK UMN program is generally to spark interest and enthusiasm in entrepreneurship, instill a mindset and basic competencies in the field of entrepreneurship, encourage increased entrepreneurial experience, increase employability, and help increase the capacity and quality of students as college graduates. 

The WMK UMN 2023 project was attended by 228 participants from outside UMN and 72 from UMN. The good credibility of Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) as the Implementing Campus of WMK 2023 Region 3 LLDIKTI attracts many participants from outside UMN to join this program.
