What is an International Accreditation?

Quoting the International Accreditation Service (IAS), accreditation is the formal and independent verification that a program or institution meets established quality standards and is competent to carry out specific conformity assessment tasks. Conformity assessment tasks may include but are not limited to, testing, inspection, or certification.

Accreditation, whether national or international, is not limited to universities or schools alone.

Organizations responsible for public safety and welfare, such as building departments, hospitals, police departments, and fire departments, also seek accreditation to demonstrate their competence and reliability.

Accreditation has been used for over 50 years as a definitive means of evaluating organizations and is now used by all major world economies and many emerging economies.

Now, the function of international accreditation is similar to national accreditation, except that international accreditation is granted by organizations from abroad.

Examples of international accreditation include the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA) and ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA).

Why is International Accreditation Important?

Universities around the world, including Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), strive to get not only national accreditation (generally from BAN-PT) but also international accreditation. Is national accreditation not enough?

According to UK International Qualifications, students may find international accreditation important if they plan to study or work abroad.

Having international accreditation can mean that the campus has global standard quality, curriculum, programs, teachers, students, and graduates.
