How to Make Every Thesis Advisor Meeting Count

UMN and the Embassy of Canada Explore International Education Opportunities

Your tuition fee covers your access to international research journals. Most students never log in. The subscription is live, the account works, and the portal sits there untouched for 4 years.
A digital library is academic material you get to online instead of on a shelf: e-books, international journals, conference papers, a repository of past student theses, and recorded lectures. The difference from a physical library is simple. It’s open when you need it, wherever you are.

What Do Students Actually Get Out of a Digital Library?
1. Journals you can’t open for free
This is the big one. Plenty of research shows up in Google Scholar, then hits a paywall. With a campus subscription, you can download that same article in full.
You can see the difference in the writing. A thesis built on peer-reviewed research is on much firmer ground than one built from whatever you could find for free.
2. No textbook bill
One translated textbook can cost a few hundred thousand rupiah, and most semesters need more than one. A campus e-book collection covers much of that at no extra cost.
3. Open at 2 a.m. (well, anytime)
Pouring rain, a late night, a weekend out of town. None of it matters anymore. If you have a connection, the material is there.
4. Faster literature searches
A big reason these drag on is finding sources that are actually relevant. Academic databases let you filter by year, author, keyword, and subject, so what could take days gets done in one sitting.
5. Room to learn outside the syllabus
Recorded webinars, video tutorials, and interactive modules let you pick up skills your classes don’t cover, whether that’s Python, graphic design, or digital journalism, without paying for a separate course.

What Does UMN’s Digital Library Offer?
Through UMN’s digital library, students get:
- National and international e-journals, including Garuda, Emerald, and ProQuest
- E-book collections from publishers like EBSCO and Springer
- A repository of theses and final projects by UMN students
- All of it through one account on the student portal
The thesis repository gets overlooked a lot, which is a shame. It’s one of the most useful things in there, especially when you’re just starting out. Read three or four theses from your own program, and you’ll see how the chapters are put together, how deep the analysis has to go, and what examiners are looking for.

How to Start This Week
The problem usually isn’t laziness. It’s not knowing where to start.
Log in to the library portal with your campus account and run one search on whatever you’re working on right now. Narrow it to the last five years, download the two or three articles that come closest, and put them in a folder.
Twenty minutes, give or take. That’s the gap between a paper with real sources behind it and one built off the first page of search results.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is a digital library?
A collection of academic material stored and accessed online, including e-books, journals, conference papers, thesis repositories, and video content.
2. Do students have to pay to read international journals?
Not if the university subscribes. The institution covers the cost, and students sign in with their campus account.
3. How is this different from Google Scholar?
Google Scholar indexes a lot of research but often stops at a paywall. A campus subscription unlocks the full text.
