Tangerang, (27/04/2026) – UMN Library, in collaboration with Kompas Book Publisher, held a guest lecture for the Faculty of Communication Sciences featuring Kamidia Radisti, a presenter and Miss Indonesia 2007. This guest lecture on Public Speaking 101, “From Fear to Clarity,” aimed to provide a deep understanding of public speaking strategies, not only as a skill but also as an art form in communication.
Public speaking is a fundamental ability required across various fields. Public speaking skills not only build confidence but also shape how a person conveys ideas clearly, structurally, and impactfully. On this occasion, Kamidia Radisti shared various public speaking tips with UMN students.
“Public speaking is not just about talking in front of a crowd; we need to know what message and content we want to convey. Of course, this delivery becomes more complex when we dig deeper. For me, emotion and feeling are needed when speaking in public, which requires a high level of emotional control,” Radisti explained.
Radisti also described how most people often blame the audience if they don’t understand the message being conveyed. In fact, this can also happen because the speaker is nervous or the message is difficult for the audience to understand, or is ‘soulless,’ which can occur due to unclear intonation or delivery.

“The art of public speaking is not only about verbal ability, but non-verbal communication (body language) is also a key supporter. Public speaking consists of 10% message, 20% voice, and 70% non-verbal. Non-verbal aspects can be assessed from eye contact, body movements, and range of motion. Therefore, how we present ourselves in front of the public becomes important,” she added.
On this occasion, Radisti also emphasized that speaking in front of an audience does not require delivering every detail of the message. The most important thing is to build curiosity and the audience’s trust in you, and to understand the material deeply rather than memorizing it.
“A strategy you can use when doing public speaking is using the ‘flow of mind’ with the What – So – Now strategy. Determine the topic you want to convey, explore the elements within that topic, and finally determine the message you will deliver to the audience. By using this strategy, I believe it will make it easier for you to determine your message,” she asserted.
In addition to message delivery, Radisti also explained that time constraints are another important factor when doing public speaking. With time limitations, what needs to be prepared concisely includes the opening, content (the issue), and the closing, which includes a call to action for the audience at the end.
“In public speaking, understanding the audience is crucial. We need to know who we are speaking to so that our message is truly understood and can make an impact. For me, the art of public speaking is impactful communication, not just delivering a narrative,” Radisti concluded.
