UMN and AFP Hold Digital Investigation Workshop for Students

Tangerang, (16/09/2026) – The Digital Journalism Study Program of Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), together with Agence France-Presse (AFP), held the one-day AFP Digital Investigation: Techniques Workshop. The event was attended by Journalism students as well as students from other majors at UMN.

As information becomes faster and easier to obtain, the ability to check and ensure the credibility of information has become important for students. The workshop, organized by the UMN Digital Journalism Study Program together with AFP, gave students an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in verifying information.

“This opportunity is valuable for us, considering that this program was designed specifically for UMN students. I hope the students gain new knowledge and important skills, so that they can explore how information and its credibility have become important amid today’s technological advances,” Dr. F.X. Lilik Dwi Mardjianto, S.S., M.A., Dean of the Faculty of Communication, said

Furthermore, Lilik also expressed hope that the collaboration between UMN Journalism and AFP will not stop at this workshop, but can open up broader collaboration opportunities in the future.

This Digital Investigation Workshop featured Sophia Xu, Digital Training Manager at AFP Hong Kong; Safrin La Batu and Gemma Holliani Cahya, Digital Investigation Editors at AFP Jakarta; and Ramadani Saputra, Digital Investigation Reporter at AFP Jakarta. The workshop also featured a UMN alumnus, Felix Nathaniel, who serves as a Digital Investigation Reporter at AFP Jakarta.

The speakers presented various topics related to digital investigation, ranging from information-checking techniques to the use of various tools that can help students verify information.

“The new and important thing I learned after attending the workshop with AFP is how to check for credible news, from the right applications and procedures to how to tell from the way a story is presented whether it is a hoax or fact,” Valerie Onassis Halim, a UMN Journalism student who attended the workshop with AFP, said.

Valerie explained that of all the sessions she attended, she liked the session that used the Google Maps platform to search for and verify a place the most, especially to confirm whether a location seen in a video or mentioned in a text matches the actual conditions. According to her, this was new knowledge that can help students be more thorough in verifying information.

“I hope that through this AFP workshop, my friends who attended and I can try checking for credible data ourselves and, of course, not fall for hoaxes,” she added.
