Tangerang (27/06/2026) – Amidst the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), designers are required not only to create aesthetically pleasing works but also to think critically in designing various future possibilities. Addressing this challenge, UMN’s Master of Design program held a sharing session titled “Speculative Design: Co-Creating Future Ecosystem with AI” for prospective new students.
Featuring speakers Dr. Teddy Hendiawan, S.Ds., M.Sn., as a UMN Master of Design Lecturer, and Dr. Anne Nurfarina, S.Sn., M.Sn., as Head of UMN’s Master of Design Study Program, this activity not only introduced the study program but also provided a direct learning experience on how AI in speculative design plays a role in shaping the future design ecosystem.
“We need to know beforehand that AI is not only ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or other forms of generative AI. Perhaps without realizing it, we actually interact with AI in many ways—from traffic lights, maps, weather forecasts, and various other things. Seeing how much we intersect with AI, it is unavoidable that the design field will also involve AI extensively,” Teddy explained.
Discussing speculative design, Teddy explained that this is about how to design the right questions about the future. Teddy also emphasized that in the realm of speculative design, AI is needed both as a partner and a thinking tool, but its role will not replace humans.
“The most important thing to know is that we must understand what our mitigation strategies as humans are with the presence of new technologies, and that is our role in speculative design,” he emphasized.
For Teddy, the future is the designer’s material. Going forward, designers will not only be required to focus on artistic aesthetics but also to think about mitigating worst-case scenarios, not just design concepts.
In addition to the material presentation on speculative design, participants involved in the sharing session also got to see several projects from UMN Master of Design Batch 2 students in the Design & Technopreneur class on Speculative Design.
Beyond discussing the concept of speculative design, participants also gained an overview of what studying at UMN’s Master of Design program is like. This learning introduction session was presented directly by Dr. Anne Nurfarina, S.Sn., M.Sn., as Head of UMN’s Master of Design Study Program. Anne explained in detail regarding courses, curriculum, and programs to support student learning in the future.
“In the Master of Design program, students are not only required to look at aesthetics in design but also how to introduce design contexts specifically and in relation to the future,” Anne explained.
Anne herself emphasized that UMN’s Master of Design program is intended for students to grow, research, and contribute through design. Anne hopes that through the Master of Design program, students can build critical and strategic ways of thinking.
