UMN Celebrates Students’ Achievements: The Book “Stories of the Pioneers of Kompas Gramedia”

Tangerang, August 12, 2026 — Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) proudly announced the launch of the book “Stories of the Pioneers of Kompas Gramedia”, an Intellectual Property (IP)-based work by students that was successfully developed and published nationally in collaboration with BIP Publishing.

The launch of this book serves as concrete evidence of UMN’s commitment to supporting creativity, professionalism, and industry readiness among UMN students. This work originated from a research and development process conducted by UMN students, which was then facilitated by faculty members and the head of the UMN Visual Communication Design (DKV) program through mentoring, narrative refinement, and publishing collaboration.

In his remarks, Ir. Teddy Surianto, Chairman of the Multimedia Nusantara Foundation, stated that the book “Kisah Para Perintis Kompas Gramedia” (Stories of the Pioneers of Kompas Gramedia) conveys the values of Kompas Gramedia in an accessible manner, namely: caring for others and the environment; being trustworthy and reliable; being competent and skilled; striving for excellence; and providing excellent service.

Teddy noted that innovation and digital transformation are indeed important. However, he also emphasized that strong values and character must still be instilled in the younger generation. Technology without integrity can lose its direction, and intelligence without values can lose its meaning.

On this occasion, Teddy also stated that the commitment of the Multimedia Nusantara Foundation (YMN) has built a comprehensive educational ecosystem, ranging from preschool, elementary, junior high, and high school through undergraduate (S1), master’s (S2), and doctoral (S3) levels—all under the umbrella of the Foundation.

During the book launch talk show featuring the pioneers, Andrey Andoko, UMN Rector, emphasized that the values of the Kompas Gramedia pioneers are also aligned with UMN’s educational philosophy. According to him, education plays a role not only in producing graduates with competencies but also with character and values that can be applied in life.

“The values of the pioneers are enshrined in UMN’s Vision, which is to produce graduates of noble character. Through this vision, UMN not only produces intelligent graduates but also those with good character. Therefore, UMN itself has adopted and integrated the 5C values (Caring, Credible, Competent, Competitive, and Customer Delight),” Andrey said.

For Andrey, these values have become increasingly relevant amid technological advancements, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). Amid rapidly changing technology and industry, technical skills must be balanced with character and human skills so people can use knowledge and technology responsibly.

“There are many values from the pioneers that we can learn from and implement in our daily lives, both at work and in our personal lives—one of which is honesty. I hope these values can serve as an example for all of us,” Andrey concluded.

These values also shape the writing process for this book by Bintang Gutama, a visual communication design alumnus of UMN and author of “Kisah Para Perintis Kompas Gramedia” (Stories of the Kompas Gramedia Pioneers). Starting with his final thesis project, Bintang saw an opportunity to bring the stories of the Kompas Gramedia pioneers to life as a children’s storybook that could introduce these values to the younger generation.

“This work originated from my final project, as well as the inspiration I felt when I realized that this story had never been adapted or packaged into a children’s storybook. For me, there are quite a few values from the pioneers P.K. Ojong and Jakob Oetama that can serve as important lessons for children to understand,” explained Bintang.

In developing his work, Bintang also described how he navigated various stages of the creative process until he finally completed the book. The value of “Working from the Heart,” as practiced by the pioneers, served as a driving force for Bintang in completing her work.

The launch of this book demonstrates that UMN’s creative ecosystem can produce IP-based works that are not only academically relevant but also have commercial value and social impact.

Moving forward, UMN hopes this success will inspire students to keep creating, develop ideas, and dare to turn their work into tangible products that contribute to society and industry.
