Tangerang – A team of lecturers from Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) has successfully won a research grant from International Media Support (IMS) Denmark. The team consists of Samiaji Bintang Nusantara, Ignatius Haryanto, and Ambang Priyonggo. However, two UMN students also participated in this research, namely Richi Rich Liang and Jocelin Nathania.
In this study, UMN representatives sought to explore the media market in Indonesia’s digital media sector. Several areas were examined, including the competitive environment and technological developments that influence media consumption patterns. In addition, this study sought to evaluate the financial sustainability of local media through an analysis of revenue sources and the long-term stability of those revenue sources.
Discussing the background of the research, Bintang, as one of the team of lecturers’ representatives, said that this research was motivated by the phenomenon and impact of digital disruption, which has changed the media landscape.
“On one hand, digitization has revolutionized the way news is created and distributed. It enables faster reporting, real-time updates, and wider access, allowing media outlets to connect with global audiences more efficiently. On the other hand, these changes have shaken up traditional media business models and ecosystems. Media revenue sources, such as advertising, continue to decline, forcing media companies to adopt subscription models, paywalls, and innovative advertising strategies. At the same time, the competitive landscape is becoming increasingly crowded, with mainstream media now competing with independent content creators, social media influencers, and digital platforms,” Bintang said when contacted by UMN News Service on Monday (12/08/2025).
In light of these conditions, the UMN lecturer team sought to identify key insights regarding Indonesian audience demographics, market trends, the competitive landscape, and technological developments that influence media consumption.
“Additionally, to identify the business and financial viability of local media, revenue streams, market scale, and the potential for media business growth,” Bintang said.
From this research, Bintang hopes that the results will have a positive impact on the media industry, particularly by helping stakeholders understand changes in audience consumption patterns and providing direction for the future of the media business.
“Amidst the current media conditions and ecosystem, our research findings identify many market opportunities that can be explored and offer hope for the sustainability of the media business,” Bintang added.
