UMN’s Policy for Sustainable Water Management

(UMN Doc.)
Since 2022, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) has implemented key policies to ensure ethical sourcing and sustainable operations on campus, particularly through its Canteen Management and Sustainable Procurement Policy. These initiatives form the foundation of UMN’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility and responsible consumption, aligning with the goals of Responsible Consumption and Production.
At the heart of these policies is a clear focus on ethical food sourcing—favoring locally sourced and seasonal ingredients to reduce environmental impact, support local farmers, and provide healthier options for the UMN community. Food vendors on campus are encouraged to prioritize fresh produce grown nearby, reducing emissions from transportation and fostering a more resilient local food system.
UMN also promotes responsible food preparation and serving practices. Vendors are required to use clean, reusable cooking equipment and minimize the use of disposables. Food preparation is ideally conducted off-site to maintain hygiene standards, with on-campus kitchens used only for reheating and final serving.
Another major emphasis is placed on sustainable packaging. All meals must be served in secure, covered containers to prevent contamination, while the use of single-use plastics — particularly Styrofoam, is strongly discouraged. Vendors are encouraged to use recyclable or reusable materials instead, contributing to waste reduction efforts.
Beyond the canteen, UMN integrates sustainability into other aspects of campus operations. The Sustainable Procurement Policy promotes eco-conscious purchasing beyond food, encouraging healthy menu offerings (including fiber-rich and plant-based options), and supporting a health-oriented campus environment through walkable infrastructure and activity-friendly facilities.

In 2024, this policy framework was further expanded to include guest reception standards, particularly the use of glass bottles and goblets during meetings and formal gatherings. Plastic mineral water bottles have been replaced by reusable glass bottles and goblets, which are now standard in all meeting rooms and guest-facing activities. This shift not only reduces single-use plastic consumption but also sets a visible example of environmental stewardship in everyday campus interactions.
UMN’s canteens also use washable and reusable utensils, and snacks at events are served in eco-friendly packaging that reflects the university’s sustainability commitment.
Through this comprehensive and continuously evolving approach, UMN is demonstrating how higher education institutions can lead by example in ethical sourcing and sustainable supply management. By embedding these values into everyday campus life, UMN is fostering a culture of sustainability that benefits the community, supports the environment, and advances national and global sustainability goals.
