Tangerang – The “Cinematography Learning Lab” series of events at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) not only focuses on the technicalities of filmmaking but also presents inspirational sessions from successful content creators. The series of events was conducted on Thursday (24/04/25) titled “Turning Your Creativity into Digital Success”, “Case Study Breakdown”, and “Story in Every Spin.” The speakers shared their experiences, tips, and tricks for maximizing content on digital platforms.
One of the young speakers who caught our attention was Galang Ganjar Kurniawan. At only 17 years old and still attending SMKN 2 Jakarta, Galang has become a successful content creator. He shared his experience of starting content with all the limitations, even when he was still using a cellphone. Now focusing on creating content on Instagram, Galang emphasizes the importance of personal branding on social media.
“Instead of worrying about ideas and procrastinating, it’s better to start with what you have,” he said. Galang also gave practical tips for beginners, such as overcoming shyness and fear, not procrastinating on ideas, and the importance of being consistent in creating.
Galang also shared strategies for creating eye-catching content with strong hooks and visuals, as well as the importance of storytelling and the use of text or subtitles in videos. When it comes to time management, Galang utilizes his breaks at school to write ideas or scripts and executes them on the weekends. His primary mindset in facing limitations is “don’t be shy” and dare to try to reach your potential.

The next session presented Juan Setiadarma from Bisa Sinema, who discussed “Case Study Breakdown” in cinematography and video production. He emphasized the importance of understanding the goals and output of a project before starting filming.
“The more references we have, the more enriching our frames will be,” he said. Juan also highlighted that filming is a collaborative work, so good communication between departments is crucial to avoid miscommunication.
Then, there was Muhamad Sadam, a traveling content creator who shared about “Story in Every Spin.” He emphasized that visually pleasing content is not enough. “You have to give value,” he said.
Sadam explained why cinematic storytelling is more memorable and easy to go viral, because it provides value for followers to share or save. He shared three main aspects of content creation: visual (composition, color, light), audio, and motion, which must be compelling within the first three seconds.
Sadam also shared the strategy of building a strong story with an interesting opening (hook), a story in the middle, and a call to action at the end. For him, strong research before creating content is fundamental to producing quality work, including on social media. He also suggested being consistent and persistent, and utilizing platforms like TikTok for beginners.
This sharing session from content creators is an important part of UMN’s Cinematography Learning Lab series, which runs from April 23-25, 2025. In addition to this session, the event also featured intensive workshops on cinematography techniques and production simulations with professional equipment. It is hoped that this event can provide comprehensive provisions for participants who want to work in the world of film and digital content.
