Tangerang – The MySalak application, developed by a team of lecturers and students from Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) in collaboration with a team from Gadjah Mada University, has successfully obtained a simple patent from the government. A simple patent is a form of intellectual property protection granted by the state for technological innovations that are novel and beneficial to society.
“We hope that the granting of this simple patent can be the first step in strengthening the development of agricultural technology innovation in Indonesia. Through MySalak, farmers are expected to obtain more accurate information about environmental conditions and the potential for pests to appear, so that they can take faster and more appropriate control measures,” said UMN lecturer Nabila Husna, who also participated in the creation of MySalak and is a lecturer in Computer Engineering at UMN.
Discussing the impact of this simple patent, Nabila explained that it is official recognition of MySalak technology’s innovative value.
“This is an important step to encourage the development of MySalak technology to a broader stage, both in terms of product development and implementation in the field. With patent protection, we also have a stronger basis for expanding collaboration with industry partners, the government, and the farming community. In addition, this patent also opens up the potential for commercialization of MySalak in the future,” she added.
MySalak Application Process Obtains Patent Rights
“The simple patent application process begins with identifying technological innovations that have new elements and practical benefits. After that, the team compiles patent documents that explain in detail the background of the technology, the problems faced, the solutions offered, and the innovation claims submitted,” said Nabila.
After that, the prepared documents are submitted to the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. From there, an administrative examination and a substantive examination are conducted to determine whether the innovation meets the criteria for a simple patent. If it is declared eligible, a simple patent is granted as legal protection for the submitted innovation.

How does the MySalak application work?
“In this system, we developed IoT nodes equipped with various sensors and placed them in plantation areas. These devices periodically collect microclimate data, then send the data to the system for analysis using an AI model,” said Nabila.
The results of the data and analysis are then displayed in the MySalak application, which also provides information related to microclimate predictions and potential pest outbreaks to farmers. The hope is that this information will help farmers take faster, more appropriate control measures, thereby increasing the effectiveness of plantation management and maintaining crop quality.
About MySalak
MySalak is an AI- and IoT-based application developed to help salak farmers deal with pests, and it is, in fact, an output of the EPICS Grant at IEEE. MySalak was also selected as one of the recipients of 117 Indonesian Innovations by the Business Innovation Center (BIC).
Not only that, MySalak was mentioned in the June 2025 edition of the DIY Land and Spatial Planning Agency Bulletin by Prof. Subejo (Deputy Dean for Cooperation, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM).
