Samiaji Bintang Nusantara has worked in journalism for almost 15 years before joining Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN). During his career in the media, he has received several awards and fellowships from several institutions and organizations, such as the Mochtar Lubis Award, Ministry of Law and Human Rights, United Nations for Development Program (UNDP) and International Center for Journalists (ICFJ). In 2009, he received a master's degree scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) to study journalism at Ateneo de Manila University, Manila, Philippines.

During his tenure as director at the Institute for Press and Development Studies (LSPP), he was also active as an editor, media researcher, and trainer in several journalism trainings for professional journalists in a number of provinces. He publishes guidebooks for journalists, such as Covering Bureaucratic Reform; Guide for Journalists (2013) and Investigative Journalism Teaching Module (2012). Some of his reporting writings have been published in a number of media syndicates and anthologies of writings related to media and journalism. Some of his research results with other researchers have been published in academic journals. During 2017-2018, together with the research team at the Faculty of Communication Sciences of UMN, he was involved in the collaborative research of the New Beats Project to examine the impact of digital disruption in the field of journalism. This collaborative research was initiated by a team of researchers from La Trobe University, Deakin University, University of Melbourne, Swinburne University, University of Sydney, and University of Amsterdam. In 2021, his research article with the research team at the Faculty of Communication Sciences of UMN will be one of the articles published in the book Journalist and Job Loss published by Routledge. The articles in the book explore the impact of digital disruption on the world of journalism and digital media that has occurred in a number of countries in the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.
