Do You Have to Be Good at Math to Study Management or Accounting? Here’s What You Need to Know

One of the most common concerns prospective students feel before choosing a major in the Faculty of Business is regarding their math ability.

“I don’t really like math, am I still suited for the Management major?”

“If my math grades are just average, am I still suited for the Accounting major?”

If you have questions like these, you are not alone. Many prospective students assume that studying in the Faculty of Business means dealing with numbers every single day. In reality, it’s not that simple. What matters more is not how fast you can calculate, but how you think logically, analyze information, and solve problems.

Do you have to be good at math to study Management?

No. The Management study program focuses more on how to manage an organization or business. Students learn about marketing strategies, human resource management, entrepreneurship, finance, and business decision-making. There are indeed courses that involve numbers, such as statistics or business analysis. However, the main goal is not memorizing complex math formulas, but understanding data to help make better decisions. This means that if you enjoy analyzing problems, discussing, developing strategies, or have leadership qualities, those abilities will be used far more often than manual calculation skills.

What about Accounting?

Many people think Accounting is just about counting numbers. In reality, the modern accounting profession has a much broader role. In UMN’s Accounting study program, students learn how financial information is used to help companies make business decisions. They study auditing, taxation, accounting information systems, financial report analysis, and the use of digital technology in the accounting world. Of course, students will encounter numbers. However, what is more important is the ability to read, analyze, and explain the meaning behind those numbers. In other words, Accounting requires more attention to detail, logic, and analytical skills than mere arithmetic ability.

So, is math or thinking ability more important?

Both Management and Accounting require logical thinking skills. The difference is that Management uses logic more for developing strategies and making business decisions, while Accounting uses logic to analyze financial information and ensure decisions are based on accurate data. Therefore, don’t immediately measure your suitability for a major based solely on your high school math grades. What you need to ask yourself is:

• Do I prefer developing strategies and growing a business?

• Or am I more interested in analyzing data and understanding a company’s financial condition?

The answers to these questions are usually much more helpful in determining your choice of study program.
