UMN Communication Science Distance Learning Gathering 2025: Bloom Beyond The Screen

Tangerang, (November 1, 2025) – The UMN Distance Learning Program in Communication Studies (Pelajaran Jarak Jauh (PJJ) Ilmu Komunikasi) held a gathering for students. The gathering featured activities such as networking, seminars, and fun games. This gathering was not only a meeting place for students of the Distance Learning Program in Communication Studies, but also aimed to strengthen connections between students.

The Communication Studies Distance Learning Program is one of the study programs under the UMN Faculty of Communication Studies that offers online learning and can be completed remotely. This year, the UMN Communication Studies Distance Learning Program held a Distance Learning Gathering with the theme “Bloom Beyond The Screen,” attended by distance learning students from various semesters. This gathering provided students with the opportunity and experience to see the UMN campus firsthand and network with fellow students.

“This activity is the perfect time for friends to get to know each other, because this activity is indeed intended for us to establish connectivity. This connection is built not only online but also offline. Of course, it also introduces and brings students closer to the UMN campus,” Helga Liliani Cakra Dewi, S.I.kom., M.Comm., Head of the UMN Communication Science PJJ Study Program.

Helga hopes that Communication Studies Distance Learning Program students who participate in this activity will have the opportunity to get to know each other better and take advantage of the new knowledge available in this gathering. Of course, it can also inspire students that there are many good opportunities to be gained by participating in the UMN Communication Studies Distance Learning Program.

This gathering was enriched with a seminar presented by Moch. Taufik Hidayatullah, a lecturer at Gadjah Mada University. Taufik discussed the importance of having good communication skills in the world of career and daily life. Taufik shared his knowledge not only through theory but also through the implementation stages.

“In communication, there are many dilemmas, especially when choosing between ethics and industry orientation. These two things always clash with existing norms, so how do we develop a good communication strategy? With four recipes for excellent communication, starting from being assertive, appreciating text and context, rejecting neutrality, and being inclusive,” Taufik explained.

For Taufik, communication is not merely about conveying messages, but also involves many interpretations, which is why the structure of communication is essential. Taufik also emphasized that students will face various non-linear situations in the future, so they must understand how communication works between people, both interpersonally and culturally.

“One of the skills that currently needs to be pursued and possessed is public speaking, both in the campus world and in industry, this skill is very important. One of the important things in public speaking is VOICE or Volume, O (Gap), Intonation, Clarity, and Energy.”

Taufik also emphasized that in today’s multi-platform era, students must have a broader understanding of the characteristics of a medium and a language. Seeing that social media users have their own characteristics, of course, in communicating, we need to adjust our communication style to the platform we’re using. In addition to the seminar, this activity also featured a sharing session by one of the alums of the Communication Studies Distance Learning Program, Habibah Faradiba. She shared her college experiences and offered inspiring tips to students.

“I had a very structured plan when I graduated from high school, and when I went to college, I convinced myself to find many activities to keep me busy. At the beginning of college, I kept myself busy by joining various organizations, from which I was able to build many relationships and gain experience,” Habibah explained.

Habibah herself explained that she continues to develop herself through experiences over time. Not only is she active in organizations, but Habibah also develops herself by working, starting with part-time jobs, freelance work, and various other activities, without neglecting what she already has.

“Graduating quickly does not necessarily mean good grades, and good grades do not necessarily mean graduating quickly. It is a choice that each individual must make. Of course, we cannot compare students in this regard, because we all have our own priorities. However, my priority at that time was to pursue opportunities more quickly, and my advisor throughout college continued to encourage and motivate me,” Habibah added.

For Habibah, the most important thing in pursuing a degree is to be consistent with what we want and to have confidence. Habibah believes that we can postpone many things, but time cannot wait, and we must strive to do our best for ourselves.
