Water Conservation Awareness (Doc. UMN)
Tangerang – At Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), water conservation is guided by the Rector’s Decree on Water Management, a formal policy that actively directs the efficient use and reuse of water resources throughout the university. This comprehensive policy ensures that sustainable water practices are not only defined but also implemented consistently across the campus.
A central focus of UMN’s water management policy is to minimize the consumption of clean, potable water. To achieve this, the university sources water both from domestic supplies (PDAM) and treated recycled water, substantially easing the demand on freshwater reserves. Cutting-edge technologies like tap-to-flow and sensor-activated faucets are employed in restrooms to optimize water use, while garden sprinklers and low-volume flushing toilets further reduce water consumption campus-wide.
Our commitment extends beyond conservation to include water reuse. Through a state-of-the-art Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), wastewater generated from restrooms, kitchens, canteens, prayer rooms, and other facilities is treated and repurposed for critical campus functions such as cooling the central air-conditioning systems, flushing toilets, and irrigating gardens. This approach significantly cuts water waste and decreases dependence on external water sources.
Aligned with its sustainability goals, UMN also implements a rainwater harvesting system. Rainwater collected from rooftops is funneled into infiltration wells, replenishing groundwater and supporting the surrounding ecosystem—further demonstrating the university’s integrated approach to water management.
To maintain the integrity of reused water, UMN conducts biannual water quality testing through certified laboratories, ensuring the water meets stringent safety standards. This ongoing monitoring protects both campus facilities and local aquatic ecosystems from contamination.
Through the formalized Rector’s Decree and its thorough application, UMN has established a clear and effective policy to maximize water reuse across the university. These efforts illustrate UMN’s dedication to sustainable water management, reinforcing its broader commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible resource use, which complements its pursuit of academic excellence and commitment to future generations.
