UMN Communications Faculty guest lecture with Kemal Mochtar at the Lecture Theatre, UMN Campus. (Doc. UMN)
Tangerang, (11/11/2025) – The Faculty of Communications of Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) held a guest lecture featuring Kemal Mochtar as the guest speaker. Kemal is an actor, radio broadcaster, presenter, and public speaking coach. On this occasion, Kemal discussed the art of speaking and how it can be an asset for ourselves and our future careers. This guest lecture is one of the courses in Public Speaking and Presentation Skills.
The art of speaking is currently one of the most important assets that everyone must have; therefore, the art of speaking can be mastered and continuously practiced by every individual, regardless of whether they are introverted or extroverted. In this guest lecture, Kemal explained how speaking skills can be an asset and capital for an individual’s future.
“Speaking skills are the number one companion today, whatever your job is. Not only presenters, but even designers, bankers, chefs, waiters, or other professions require good speaking skills. Speaking skills are 80% technical because we need to practice continuously, and 20% psychological. Without good speaking skills, one mistake in speaking can cause significant damage,” Kemal explained.
Kemal also noted that many business owners emphasize speaking skills in their employees. According to him, in addition to good service, good speaking skills can make more people satisfied, and with these skills, business or work can certainly be communicated well.
“The world has changed so much. By training your speaking skills and confidence, you can support your career. A simple example is that many people now sell on social media via live streaming. According to a survey, many people skip the live stream within the first second. For me, with good speaking skills, you can humanize the product and not just talk about the product itself, but also engage with the audience,” Kemal added.
Kemal also conveyed various things that can be trained, starting from the mouth muscles and breathing. In addition, intonation and tone also need to be considered. With the right intonation and tone, you can convey good expressions, and the audience can also express themselves. Good speaking skills can lead to good communication.
“Don’t use shyness or inability to speak as an excuse for not practicing your speaking skills. I believe that everyone can practice their speaking skills and public speaking. Building branding and selling is important, but without speaking skills, it will be meaningless,” Kemal concluded.
