The Sustainability Innovation Challenge 2025, an annual innovation competition program initiated by Skystar Ventures Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), officially began with a kickoff event held at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), Singapore.
Held on Monday, September 15, 2025, the program kickoff brought together 33 participants from three countries, namely Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) from Indonesia, Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) from Singapore, and Malaysia Multimedia University (MMU) from Malaysia, to innovate on sustainability issues that can be applied in practice.
The kickoff was opened with remarks by Mr. Anand Krishnasamy, Director—Centre of Innovation and Life Skills NYP, and Mr. Andrey Andoko, Rector of Multimedia Nusantara University. The session then continued with Billy Wong, Facilities Engineer from NYP ESS (Eco-Campus Solution and Services Department), presenting the problem statement to explain the case study students will work on during the competition.
This 14-day inter-university collaboration program was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to produce relevant innovations. During the competition, participants participated in a comprehensive series of activities, such as workshops, empathy studies, and mentoring sessions with 11 mentors.
At the end of the program, students will pitch or present their innovation ideas to three judges from practitioners and industry. This pitching session will also determine the three teams with the best innovations as winners.
“The Sustainability Innovation Challenge aims to encourage students to be more sensitive to sustainability issues that impact not only business (profit) but also the planet and people. In addition, this program is also expected to hone students’ problem-solving skills while learning and collaborating with international students,” said Cinthya Tania, Business Incubator Vice Manager of Skystar Ventures.
Overall, this program is expected to encourage younger students to be more aware and concerned about sustainability issues and challenges. With guidance and international networking opportunities, Skystar Ventures UMN hopes this competition will produce brilliant ideas and shape innovators ready to provide real solutions for the environment and society.
