Tangerang – In response to the urgent issue of water pollution in Jakarta’s Pluit Reservoir, students from Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) designed a regenerative Water Research and Education Center aimed at restoring not only the environment, but also public awareness around responsible water usage. Once a natural swamp and water catchment area, the reservoir has faced heavy ecological degradation due to unfiltered sewage discharge and unplanned urban development. The proposed center integrates ecosystem restoration, sustainable infrastructure, and community education into one functional space, encouraging the public to rethink their relationship with water in urban environments.
The design incorporates non-formal, interactive educational methods to help people of all ages better understand the urban water cycle and the consequences of neglecting it. From hands-on installations to flexible learning spaces, the hub invites community members to engage directly with water issues affecting their everyday lives. By turning a polluted site into a space for environmental learning, UMN’s initiative promotes long-term behavioral change and collective action. This effort directly supports water in the community by raising awareness and actively encouraging responsible water use within the wider Jakarta community.
