Tangerang, (November 5, 2025) – UMN continues to initiate various collaborative activities with international university partners. This time, the Faculty of Communications (Fakultas Ilmu Komunikasi/FIKOM) at UMN initiated a Visiting Professor program with Prof. Randy Jay C. Solis, PhD. Randy participated in various activities with the UMN Faculty of Communications, including guest lectures, lecturer-sharing sessions, and community outreach.
The visiting professor program held by FIKOM UMN this time invited Prof. Randy Jay C, Solis, PhD., as the Chair of the Graduate Studies Department, College of Media and Communications, University of the Philippines Diliman. Randy is one of the professors active in the field of mediatization, and he also conducts extensive research in the field of communication strategy and digital media.
Randy participated in a series of activities with FIKOM UMN, including community outreach on Friday, November 1, 2025. The community outreach program that Randy participated in was one of the UMN ECO student projects, namely the preservation of seagrass. This activity was held on Pari Island, Kepulauan Seribu Regency.

“This activity is excellent and shows how UMN strongly instills the values of sustainability. The students involved also demonstrate their efforts in supporting sustainability that impacts nature. For me, this is good preparation for students, so that after graduation, they not only graduate and understand the theory but also continue to protect and preserve nature,” Randy said.
Randy hopes that UMN’s efforts and support for sustainability can be maintained forever and expanded. In the future, these activities can have a lasting impact on the environment and continue to instill sustainability values in students.
In addition to participating in community outreach, Randy also had the opportunity to teach FIKOM students, including undergraduates and graduates. Randy shared various things and insights gained from research in the field of communication, one of which was the topic of mediatization research.

“In conducting research, I start from my curiosity. One of my research topics is about the scope of child safety. However, this research is not just about the physical safety and comfort of children as they learn or grow, but also about online safety. Digital media is now ubiquitous, and this exposes children to bullying and child predators,” Randy explained.
Randy also explained that the theory used is quite old, but according to Randy, these theories are still valid today; only the form and medium have changed, and the press remains an entertainment platform for many people. Randy also explained how mediatization is currently changing people’s attitudes and perspectives on matters ranging from life and opinions to even politics.
“Although the media is a place for entertainment and information, not all media has the power to change human autonomy, or what is known as interpersonal encounters. In addition, the media is currently interconnected, so that one piece of information can be spread across various media platforms,” Randy added.

Randy also had the opportunity to share his knowledge with the UMN Master of Communication Science class. This guest lecture was held at Menara Kompas, Palmerah. He raised the topic of “Strategic Communication Media”. This topic is essential for students to understand how effective communication works amid the advancement of media and the platforms that offer various means of communication.
This visiting professor activity supports various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals). Through this visiting professor program, the UMN academic community and its partner universities can continue to support sustainable development.
