August 27, 2025Two UMN students, Keycia Amanda Hutomo and Gabriella S. E. Proyono, are officially involved in the prestigious international program “Tsunami United 2025.”
TANGERANG – Two students from the Strategic Communication Program at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), Gabriella Stevie Euodia Priyono and Keycia Amanda Hutomo, have been selected as facilitators in the international Tsunami United 2025 program.
Tsunami United 2025 is an initiative focused on the younger generation, organized by UNESCO-Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), U-INSPIRE Indonesia, and Pacifico. The younger generation has a vital role in bringing creativity, adaptability, and societal influence.
This prestigious program, which will take place online from August to September 2025, involves high school students from countries in the Indian Ocean region through a series of interactive online sessions, mentoring, and campaigns. The goal is to educate and build awareness among the younger generation about tsunami disaster mitigation, focusing on global collaboration, sustainability, and disaster preparedness.
Gabriella Stevie Euodia Priyono, a 2022 Strategic Communication student at UMN, explained that she had the opportunity to participate in Tsunami United 2025 after being directly offered the opportunity by her advisor. She admitted that she was surprised because the appointment came suddenly. Although she was initially afraid because she had to speak English in front of an international audience, Gabriella welcomed the opportunity to contribute to this international event. This opportunity is not just a personal experience, but also a tangible form of UMN students’ contribution to global disaster issues.
“While you are still young and have many opportunities, never hesitate and miss out on opportunities. Where there is opportunity, just try it because it could also be a door to future success. If the lecturers believe in us, why shouldn’t we believe in ourselves?” Gabriella said.
During the event, Gabriella was a facilitator and Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the second session on August 22, 2025. She also provided additional insights, guided discussions, and accompanied high school students from various countries in creating infographics about tsunami preparedness. She carried out this role together with the keynote speaker from UNESCO.
“I am happy and grateful to have been chosen as UMN’s representative as a facilitator at Tsunami United 2025. This is a great opportunity, and I can meet many other amazing people,” Gabriella said.
Furthermore, she emphasized that the knowledge gained at UMN, especially in communication, was beneficial when interacting with an international audience. Despite language and cultural differences being a challenge, Gabriella said that her academic experience trained her to manage the event to keep it interactive.
“In the Strategic Communication program at UMN, we learn a lot about communication. That really helped because I had to engage an international audience, overcome language differences, and still be able to make the session interactive,” she explained.
Gabriella also hopes that awareness among Indonesians, especially the younger generation, about tsunami preparedness will continue to increase.
“In Indonesia itself and in my region, not many people are aware of tsunami preparedness. So, I hope that not only my friends in Lebak, but the entire community can have the same understanding about their preparedness for natural disasters,” she said.
