Tangerang, (12/11/2025) – In addition to honing and developing students’ soft skills, Pekantara also aims to prepare students for the future, especially in English language skills. As part of Pekantara, there are English Day, Showcase, and English Debate events. This learning and implementation process is crucial in preparing UMN students to develop English language proficiency, one of the skills needed to tackle the challenges of the professional and global world.
It is often observed that English language learning is rarely revisited in higher education institutions. Given the increasing globalization around us, it is also essential for UMN to prepare students with future-ready skills. Emanuella Christine Natalia Mau, S.Pd., M.Hum., as the Pekantara Event Coordinator and UMN English Study Coordinator, explained that English has become a subject that must be emphasised in higher education.
“English language learning, especially in higher education, can be conducted through various approaches, not just through IELTS or TOEFL preparation assessments. UMN itself has adopted the English for Professional Purposes (ESP) approach, which focuses on English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Through this, we aim to prepare students for their future professions,” Lia explained.

For Lia, learning English is essential for students to continue studying. This is also applied to English Studies at UMN, which not only focuses on project results but also explores the students’ reflection process in the form of narratives (digital narrative portfolios).
“One of our approaches to emphasize the importance of English to students is a showcase in collaboration with Lac Hong University, Vietnam. In this project, students collect ideas and works, which are compiled in an asynchronous app template and will later be assessed to determine which ones are the best,” Lia added.
English learning at UMN is not only about learning professional grammar. More deeply, UMN emphasizes students’ ability to think critically and to build sound arguments.
“I hope that English learning at UMN will help them in their future careers. Through this learning, students can implement English professionally, academically, and in everyday life,” Lia said.
