Paris Island, (01//11/2025) – Universitas Multimedia Nusantara recently held planting seagrass program, this event is held at Bintang Beach, Pari Island. This event isn’t just participated by the students but involves few of UMN’s team Student Engagement, Research, Innovation, and Sustainability and also Visiting Professor Prof. Randy Jay C, Solis PhD. Randy as The Chair of the Graduate Studies Department, College of Media and Communications, University of the Philippines Diliman.
Seagrass is one of the plant species that grows in marine waters and has a lot of benefits for the environment. Following the benefits of Seagrass are reducing carbon emissions, source of food for marine life, and also to prevent coastal erosion. As one of concrete steps by UMN to educate the public and contribute to sustainability efforts, these activities have become increasingly important, so students aren’t just gonna learn in class but also gain first-hand experience in the field, understanding the benefits and natural habitat of seagrass.
“We’re choosing to plant seagrass because a lot of people still find it unfamiliar with these plants, much more people know more about Mangrove. These activities are expected to give the students more knowledge and also the benefits of seagrass, and also real commitment to support conservation and sustainability”, says Vallen Kalonia as Executive Board of UMN ECO.
Beside gaining more knowledge about seagrass the participant also plants Seagrass saplings along the coastline. This activity isn’t just participated by the students but followed by the lecturers of UMN, and one of the professors from University of the Philippines Diliman.

“This activity is really good and it’s seen how UMN’s really embed sustainability value, the student’s participation shows their effort in supporting sustainability impact for nature. For me this is a good foundation for the students, so when they graduate they’re not just gonna graduate and understand the theory but also protect and preserve nature”, says Randy.
Randy expected UMN’s effort and support for sustainability could be maintained and expanded more. In the future, these activities could have a lasting impact on nature and continue to instill values of sustainability in students.
Moreover, UMN ECO activities are expected to become ongoing initiatives that continuously support sustainability. Through these small steps it is hoped that the UMN academic community will keep contributing to the sustainability of the Earth. These activities also support several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
